I started Urban Poetry in 2006(ofcl. 8/9/07
Dal. Co.) as a Brand Name for my clothing line while enrolled at El Centro
College, for fashion design. I choose Urban Poetry because those two words
together best described me as a poet and my garments were poetic in a sense.
I, like many, who go off to design school may understand, started out thinking because my designs were so cool, everyone was gonna “Love It”, “Buy It”, “Wear It” and I’ll be the next “Fashion Star”... the next Michael Kors, Betsy Johnson, Tory Burch. Yeah RIGHT… then reality hit! I have come to realize that the Fashion INDUSTRY, as it is now, is not for everyone and if you want to have a successful clothing line.......IT AIN'T THAT EASY!!! You need a lot of...MONEY, TIME, DEDICATION and MAN POWER! (Side Note…Hats off to all Independent Freelance Designers for staying true to the art of who you are and not by a dictation of others telling you what trends to produce.)
I have done a lot of work in the fashion industry, from
designing custom clothes; assist in opening a boutique which highlighted things
that were original and One-of-a-Kind; to working for high-end boutiques and
luxury retailers;…but at the end of the day, I was not fulfilled, as they say.
Most of the time I was torn and actually highly offended with the INDUSTRY;
seeing how much one could spend on material things; knowing it was more than I was making a month. Also, thinking of the cost and where the
item came from dismayed my heart. The inhumane conditions a soul must go through, just so that someone else, could “LOOK GOOD”.

I started to question my PURPOSE in life, as we all do at some point, and I began to think about what I was truly passionate about; what sparked my interest like none other; what was the one thing I just “LOVED” as a child? Then it suddenly hit me! All the bits and pieces of thoughts and ideas scattered around on whatever I could find to write on….Urban Poetry wasn't simply a clothing line but an “Experience Through Artistic Expression”. I love art and poetry, especially the poetry that speaks through urban art; I Love Who I Am, and where I come from. Now, don't get me wrong, I still Love fashion, but not for brand names yet for how it allows one to express who they are without speaking. I also love the poetry that speaks through unique and artistic garment construction.

So, Urban Poetry is my blog highlighting and offering inspiration to my readers on art /artist that think outside the box and push the boundaries. While also, bring about social awareness of conditions plaguing any urban community as well as those stories that are uplifting through the use of art to provoke thought.
What does Urban Poetry mean? It is finding beauty in the grim...the stories of rising from the ashes...art that is unexpected. Urban Poetry is about the artistry of imagination... so please share in the experience of "Urban Poetry".
